The work of art that I have chosen is "The Runaway" by Norman Rockwell.
Before starting to work with the image I would ask my students about its title "The Runaway"
- Have you ever felt you wanted to run away? when, why?
- What were your feeling?
- Did tell anyone? Did you trust anyone?

Then, I would show my students work of Art. They have to decide if it is a photo or a painting, when it was painted, in which country and so on.
Later, I would ask them to describe the scene: what they can see, the characters. And finally, we make up a story:
- Why is the boy in the diner? Why is he alone?
- Will the policeman make the boy return home? Will he feed the boy first?
- Has his mother even realized that the boy had run away? Will he be punished by the police or by his mother?
I have written a possible story and now the students have to use REPORTED SPEECH to complete the story. In pairs they will write dialogues and then report them. This activity will take about 20 minutes and then they will read their stories to the rest of the groups.
