Crime Scene by Anthony Renaldo Flake

Shared by Rebeca García:

I've used this activity from 2nd of ESO onwards. The only thing that changes is students' output -the more advanced the students, the more advanced English they will use-.

The painting or photo may vary depending on the topic, for example, for crime this year I've used "Crime Scene" by Anthony Renaldo Flake but other years I've used "Nighthawks" by Hopper.

First, in pairs, one student faces the screen while the other faces the wall at the back. The former describes the painting while the other draws the image being described.

After checking the accuracy of the drawing and description, in pairs they have to discuss the main facts of the painting:

Who's there?,

What's going on?, Why are they there?,

When and where does the action take place?,

What had happened before?,

What will happen later?

(These last 2 questions can be used with 3rd ESO students onwards).

After 5-7 minutes, the whole class shares their stories.

Then, they need to name the characters and decide the relationship between them.

Finally, they have to recreate the painting with a dialogue according to the story they came up with. As a follow-up they can write a narrative based on it.
