I and the Village by Marc Chagall

Shared by Soledad Salán:

The painting I have chosen to work with my Primary Fourth Graders students is 'I and the Village' by the Belarusian-French artist Marc Chagall. It was created in 1911.

I can start my lesson asking my students what COLOURS can they see in this picture. We have previously studied the Colour Wheel. Are they Primary colours?( Red, yellow, blue)...or, maybe are they Secondary colours?( made by mixing the primary colours).

We can also introduce new concepts, such as, 'complementary colours'(opposite colours in the colour wheel) or 'analogous colours'( colours next to each other on the colour wheel).

Are there any complementary or any analogous colours in this picture?

Where can you see them?

SHAPES is another topic we could work:

How many different shapes can you see?How many circles? How many triangles?

How many squares?...

Does it remind you of Picasso?

Is it a Cubist painting?

ANIMALS:

How many animals can you see?

Are they domestic or wild animals?

JOBS:

How many jobs can you name that appear in this picture?

PLANTS:

Is it a bush, a tree or grass?

Can you name the parts of it?

Why is it called 'the tree of Life'?

PLACE PREPOSITIONS:

The church is next to the green house...

JEWELLS:

What jewells can you see?

A final task could be a craft picture made with different colour papers, cut outs from magazines...trying to reproduce it but with a personal style.
