Title: Creativity through Art
Level: B2
Aims:
- To speculate by using present and past modals of deduction through a famous work of art.
- To create a creative and cohesive story with its different parts and elements using variety of past tenses, linking words, adverbs and adverbial phrases.
- To be able to do some research on works of art and comment on the information found.

Activities:
1. As a whole-class, students are shown the painting Interior by E. Degas and asked to speculate. Deductions must be made by using both present and past modals:
She may/might be…
He may/might be…
It may /might be…
They may /might be…
…
They may / might have…
She must have…etc.
Teacher encourages students to make speculations to answer, at least, the following questions:
Who are they?,
Where are they? ,
When?,
What’s happening?,
How are they feeling?,
What’s happened?...
Alternative: in pairs. Each pair is shown/ given the painting and take turn to make deductions about it.
2. In groups of 3-4, students make up a story with the information they have provided.
Context: Who? Where? When? Why?
Body: What happened?
Ending
3. Students write their stories in the paddle provided and vote by liking the story they like the most.
4. Class discussion.
As a whole-class, they comment on the positive /good aspects of the winning story.
5. Research.
Students are encouraged to do some research on the painting (Painter, movement, significance, important facts…)
As a whole class, students comment on the information they have found out, surprising facts, etc.
