Shared by Carmen María Gancedo:
This activity consists of analysing the painting The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí.
The learning objectives are:
-to analyze a painting,
-to describe elements of art
-to use modal verbs to speculate on possibilities.
I will be projecting the image on a screen and I will ask them if they are familiar with Dalí and his work.
First of all, we will be working on key vocabulary related to colour, shape, movement, texture and feelings that the painting may suggest.
The questions I will be posing are:
-What feelings does the use of colour evoke in you?
-Does the painting convey a certain mood?
-What about the geometric figures and the deviation of the shapes and forms?
-Are the forms natural? Are they three-dimensional?
-What about the light? Is there clarity or darkness around the objects in the painting?
-What about the space? Is it deep or shallow? Does it appear stable or unstable?
-What are the objects that attract your attention? In which way are they emphasised?
-What do 'melting clocks' suggest?
Once these questions have been answered I will ask them about Einstein and its theory of relativity. I will ask them to connect that theory with the representation of relativity of space and time.
That way they will be able to look for more symbols in the painting: the human figure in the middle, the ants covering the orange clock at the bottom, the fly...
They will be using modal verbs to speculate on the meaning of iconography and symbolism.
