Explosion by Georges Grosz
Shared by Mª del Carmen Martín:
In my classes of History for 4th ESO I usually use images of pieces of art for introducing the topic and one of my favourites activities is to allow the students to guess why this image is in this topic.
They have to say their hypothesis that are demonstrated or not when we study the topic in a deeper way:
I guess it is linked with...
It would be related with...
It might be linked with...
From my perspective I thinks it refers to....
In our book at the end of each unit it appears a reference to the artistic movements that are linked to this period of time so when we arrive to this moment they will exactly know why we have made the reference to this piece of art at the very begining of the topic.
Now I am teaching the World War I so I have used the painting Explosion of the German artist Georges Grosz who was also a soldier in this war.
The title of the painting is very suggestive for the students and its aspect too because it makes them reflect about the consequences of the war for people, the destruction of cities, and also they can compare it with other types of paintings we have seen related with the war like the Execution of the 3rd May of Francisco de Goya or The Freedom leading the people of Delacroix.
I think it is a very interesting activity. Sometimes I do a puzzle that they have to put together and on the back I write key words that once they have been ordered they form a full sentence related with the topic that can be used as introduction of it.
