This activity is thought to be developed at the 7th period, for 4th ESO bilingual students.
1. First, I would ask students to close their eyes and try to visualize a spring landscape. They have to think about some words, expressions, emotions that spring to their minds. When it is time to open their eyes, they will brainstorm some of them.
2. Then, I would show them this picture by D. Hockney, “The arrival of spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire, 2011” and ask them about the similarities with the one they had imagined.
3. What is it that strike their minds when they look at this picture, if any? Any new emotions?
4. Next, they try and describe the picture.
5. As a writing activity, they imagine themselves stepping into the picture and write a few lines following these questions:
- Why are you there?
- Where are you coming from?
- Who are you with?
- Where are you going? What are you going to do?
6. As a speaking activity, they will read out their own stories (Talking about the past, present, possible future…) The rest of students can make questions on their partners stories.
7. The students will vote for the story which best fits the picture.
8. If time, we will have a look a two short videos about the painter’s works of art.
