Destino, by Salvador Dalí and Walt Disney

Walt Disney & Salvador Dali's - Destino 2003 (HD 1080p) from Delectant on Vimeo.

Shared by Julia Patricia López:

I've always been fascinated by art and, from the moment I saw the title of this course, I knew I could not miss it! And not only did it meet my expectations, but they exceeded them by far. While I was listening to Catherine, I suddenly remembered a short film that I had seen a few years ago. It is entitled "Destino" and it is a collaborative project between two of the most renowned artists of the 20th century: Salvador Dalí and Walt Disney.

Sadly, it took 50 years to see the light of day, as WWII broke out and the studio faced financial struggles. Consequently, both Dalí and Disney weren't there to see it but everyone involved in the project worked their best to remain faithful to their vision.

Without further ado, here is my video exploitation:

1. Warmer. Brainstorming activity: What do you know about Walt Disney’s and Salvador Dali’s work? Elicit student’s previous knowledge about their background.

2. Short introduction to the surrealist movement and some of the most iconic paintings of Dalí and its symbols. Brief explanation of Chronos, the personification of time in Greek mythology.

3. Students predict in pairs what they are going to watch by showing them some pictures taken from different moments of the film.
4. Students watch the film. Their first task is to spot the symbols discussed in step 2.

5. Students watch the film again. Whole class debate on the meaning of the film. How would you describe it? How did it make you feel? Does it have a message? Provide a list of adjectives and a few prompts.

6. Students tell their partner their own interpretation of the film. How different is it from their peer’s?

I look forward to read the activities of the rest of participants of this course.
